Day 13: Things to do in Dunedin, New Zealand

How we tour Dunedinthe second largest city in the South Island, New Zealand, in half a day.

9.30AMCaroline Bay, located opposite of the Timaru Port, ranked 4th in the survey done by AA Traveller as the most popular beach in New Zealand. There is also a big recreational space right next to the beach, expects activities like (just to name a few) beach volleyball, tennis & basketball court, skatepark and a campervan/ motor home carpark permitted for overnight parking (most importantly) for free

The car park also have access to fresh water supply (to top up water tank in our campervan), dump station (to drain out dirty water from our waste water tank) and an eerie looking toilet. It's a quiet park, probably due to the fact that it's winter but I reckon it will get busy in summer with the different activities and carnival happening in the park. All in all, it's a nice pleasant park in a great location

Long car ride call for more random road photos.

We stopped by a random beach along the way and totally awed by the view. How to resist a photo?

12:00PM: ..and finally after two and half hour drive. Hello, Dunedin!

12:30PM: World's Steepest Street  Baldwin Street. It's officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Record. Located about less than 5 minutes drive from the Dunedin's main city area, the Baldwin Street is known as "another hidden gem of Dunedin, one of South Island's greatest hidden gems" on New Zealand's official tourism website. #NZmustdo

I can't quite imagine the life of the residents at the side of the street to have hundreds of visitors every now and then appearing in front of your house. Or even thousands when there organise events on the street! Now I am curious about the property prices of the suburb.

1.30PM: University of Otago, founded in 1869, New Zealand's oldest university.

1.45PM: We had our lunch in the cafeteria in the campus. It's quite pricey (NZD18 for our burger and salmon rice) considering it's catering for the students.

2.30PM: Dunedin Railway Station

3.00PM: The faint chocolate smell hung in the air that gets stronger as we approached nearer to the chocolate's lover heaven  Cadbury World

There are guided tours that you can join to watch the chocolate making process  full tour (75 mins) only available on weekdays at NZD22 (adults) / short tour (45 mins) only available on weekends and public holidays at NZD16 (adults) / centre tour (10 mins) at NZD5 (adults). Check out their Cadbury Chocolate NZ website for more information.

We didn't join any of the tour due to the time constraint but we did have some retail therapy inside the Cadbury World Retail Shop. Damage: NZD76.80

3.45PM: Onwards to Invercargill

Houses in Dunedin

Not everyday you get to see beautiful sky like this.

We drove a crazy mileage of 400+km from that day just to make sure we can reach the southern-most part of New Zealand to be in time for the Bluff Oyster Festival on the following day. Well, the name says it all! It's an OYSTER festival!

8.30PM: Nothing feels better than an ice cold beer after a long day. Ahh..
